Installing your zip screen yourself

Our zip screens are designed for self-installation. With standard tools and an extra pair of hands, your screen will be up in a couple of hours.

  • Approx. 1–2 hours per screen
  • 2 people
  • Instructions in the box

What you’ll need

  • Drill with a 6 mm masonry bit (or a wood bit for fitting onto the window frame)
  • Spirit level (at least 60 cm) and a pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Screwdriver or cordless drill/driver with a bit set
  • Sturdy ladder or step ladder
  • A second person to hold the cassette

What’s in the box?

  • Cassette with the rolled-up fabric and built-in Somfy io motor
  • Two side guides with zip guidance
  • Bottom bar
  • Mounting brackets and end caps
  • Instructions
  • Remote control (if ordered)

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Check your delivery

Unpack everything carefully and lay the parts out on a clean, soft surface. Check that everything is complete and undamaged. Is something missing? Please contact us before you start.

  2. Step 2

    Mark the positions

Hold the cassette at the right height and mark the drill holes. Use the spirit level: a cassette that isn’t level will make the fabric run crooked. For a recess fit, also check that the reveals are straight.

  3. Step 3

    Fit the cassette

Drill the holes, insert the wall plugs and screw the cassette or brackets into place. Do this with two people: one holds the cassette, the other screws it in.

  4. Step 4

    Fit the side guides

Attach the guides on the left and right, perfectly plumb (check with the spirit level along the full length). The guides must be exactly parallel, otherwise the zip will run stiffly.

  5. Step 5

    Connect the motor

The Somfy io motor comes with a connection cable. Plug it into an outdoor socket or have the motor connected to a switch. Want it hard-wired to the mains? Have this done by a qualified electrician.

  6. Step 6

    Pair the remote and test

Pair the remote control following the instructions. Run the screen fully up and down a few times and check that the fabric runs taut and straight through the guides.

Safety

  • Always work with two people on screens wider than 2 metres.
  • Use a cable and pipe detector to check for wiring and water pipes before drilling.
  • Leave fixed electrical connections to a qualified electrician.
  • Don’t use the screen in winds stronger than stated in the instructions.
